Painting Nobz and Catching Up

So I haven’t posted in quite sometime, due mostly to health issues, but the silver lining is that I’m on the mend and feel well enough to get back into tabletop gaming. It’s been a long road but I’m back at it already have projects in the works. Let’s do a quick recap of what’s been going on since you last heard from me.

Catching Up

  • Corruption
My 8 year-old daughter expressed interest in 40K and is playing Orks! It’s the faction I know best so I can help her out with most of the rules, guiding her playing so she’s not too caught up with the memorization or tactics and more focused on the fun. This means I’ve been relegated to playing World Eaters, which can be quite nasty if tuned correctly. We play mostly fluffy games with very watered down objectives on our home table and so far she’s having a blast.  It really warms my heart to see her rolling dice and planning out moves, I mean, what father wouldn’t be proud?
  • New Ork Codex
The new codex dropped right about the time I started getting sick and I feel a tad overwhelmed. I’m loving reading the r/Orks subreddit (disclaimer, I’m a moderator over there) and seeing how Orks are fairing with the new book. Some units got a huge boost and others took a beating but I’m trying to reserve judgement until I’ve actually seen them first-hand on the tabletop. I haven’t picked up any of the new units but they are on my list once I’ve made progress painting some of the other models in the army, unless they prove to be a power-house on the table… then all bets are off!
  • World Eaters / Chaos Daemons (Khorne)
Starting back in 7th edition, I started collecting a Khorne Daemonkin army to diversify my tabletop experience. What was not to love? Unlimited summoning, blood tithe, daemons and CSM causing havoc… just awesome. Then GW released 8th edition and proverbially shot KDK in the head. I guess the upside is that now I have 2 armies, CSM: World Eaters and Khorne Chaos Daemons. I’m still super new to the ways of Chaos and from what I’ve experienced on the tabletop, I rather enjoy their tactics and their lore. Currently I have a only a few of them painted and look forward to getting them into the project rotation. You can expect more updates and progress photos showing up in the feed and on my socials.
  • Painting
As stated above, painting has been at a near stand-still since mid September 2018. I’ll post a few retro articles with the finished painting of a few units I did complete between April and September 2018 but you can expect this site to see more action from my part going forward. I plan on painting not only Orks but World Eaters, Khorne Daemons and Space Wolves to help keep me fresh and not fall into another slump. This is all contingent on my health which, naturally, is paramount. Unit’s that I’m looking forward to painting despite of tabletop performance: Flashgitz, Tankbustas, Deffkoptas, Trukks, Battlewagons, Bezerkers, Rhinos, Blood Crushers, Dark Apostles (new and old sculpts) and Flesh Hounds (The Barghest models from Puppetswar)

Painting Nobz
Now to the eye-candy, Nobz. I’ve collected Nobz since the start of my Ork army in 2013 and I had only painted a random few to lead my Boyz squads. Last year, I made a push to complete 2 full units of 5 with various loadouts and quite frankly, I’m a little sad that I had not started sooner. The details and war gear make the model dynamic enough as not to feel like a grind (aka Boyz batch painting) so they’ve kept it interesting. Like most Ork players I have a huge pool of Nobz to choose from and have really enjoyed the ones I have chosen to paint. The one variant I haven’t painted are standard Slugga/Choppa vanilla Nobz as they seem boring and I fully acknowledge that I have no experience to support that claim, so shame on me. What do you think of the Nobz kit? Are “vanilla” Nobz a bore to paint or am I just being dramatic? Anyway, below is my latest squad. You can see the other squad of Nobz I finished last year here
